Carefully cut out the opening with a utility knife. Fill the box with cat litter. Place a piece of carpet near the opening to catch the excess litter.
I recommend a cat tree
You know what a cat tree looks like: it’s a sprawling, often wooden structure covered in rope and carpeting. Your cat may even already have one. If not, why not take the “tree” in cat tree literally with this DIY project? It’s recommended you choose juniper tree branches for their looks and durability. You can either buy the tree branches at a craft store or cut them down yourself (but make sure you have permission to do so first!). After some staining and finessing, voila! Your cat will love it.
Self-Petting Station
What is a self-petting station, you ask? It’s a contraption with a giant pipe-cleaner-like toilet brush affixed to a wooden block that’s carpeted. Instead of rubbing against your legs or feet while you try to get important stuff done around the house, your cat can entertain themselves with this petting station. The toilet brush is meant to mimic the sensation of a thorough petting. Your cat feels loved, you get your to-do list done; it’s a win-win! This station can also double as a toy in a pinch.
Treat Dispenser Puzzle
Your cat is a good girl or boy, so of course, they deserve treats from time to time. Still, unsealing the bag and dropping the treats on the floor (or hand-feeding your cat if that’s more your thing) is lacking a little something. Make treat time game time with a DIY treat dispenser puzzle. You can use an old plastic food storage container for this project. By cutting variously-sized holes out of the top of the lid and filling the container with a bunch of little toys, your cat will use their creative thinking to get their treats freed from the puzzle.
Cat Wand
Save money making toys for your cat with a DIY cat wand. It’s recommended you use a dowel rod for the wand itself. Otherwise, you’re free to add whichever creative touches you want, such as pieces of felt, paper, or whatever other material gets your cat going. Wrap some felt around the dowel where your hand will go for hours of comfortable playing. Here’s a hint: to engage your cat for the first time you introduce the wand, rub some catnip on it. That will get your kitty ready for some thrills!
Another easy one is a hammock
Give your cat a taste of the good life by making them a cat diy hammock. They’ll sit in the lap of luxury with little effort on your part. You only need a cardboard box for the base (make sure you can get one without your kitty claiming it!) and an old cloth for the hammock. With some cutting and tying of the cloth on both sides, your cat will be ready to spend their days judging all us humans from their new perch.
Outdoor Enclosure
Some cats are terrified of the great outdoors and want to remain inside at all times. Others like to roam for a few hours before returning to the safety of their home. Others still could spend hours outside. If your cat likes the outdoors, build them a safe, roomy enclosure. In this cat DIY project, you’ll only need wood and some chicken wire on hand. The cool part about this project is you can customize it to your liking! For instance, your cat can have a smaller enclosure or you can build one that sprawls the width of your house.

1. Cats are indeed independent by nature, but they’re not quite able to take care of themselves. Before you adopt, make sure that your lifestyle can make room for a feline. How busy you are and the amount of time you spend at home will dictate the kind of cat you should get — very busy people may find it difficult to find the time for a cat that needs a lot of grooming and attention, especially the highly intelligent and active cats. But, there are cats that are ideal for the working lifestyle. Do your research.
2. What if your circumstances change after the adoption? Or if you work long hours and still want a friendly face to greet you at the door at the end of the day? Adopting a buddy for the cat to play with can be an excellent solution.
3. Do you have any allergies? If you do suffer from severe allergic reactions, consider testing yourself for feline allergies before bringing a cat home. Then again, some people with allergies might adapt to their own pet, but still be allergic to other cats. A safe bet is to choose a cat with low allergens. Consult your vet, books, or animal shelter employees for suggestions.
4. Before you bring your cat home, take it for a checkup and immunizations. Also, schedule it in to be neutered as soon as age permits. This can mean the difference between a healthy and happy cat, and a miserable cat trying to claw its way through the windows or spraying your furniture.
5. Get a good litter box and quality cat litter. An enclosed litter box can allow you and your cat more privacy, and clumping litter is easier to maintain. Keep the box clean, for the comfort of your cat and your nose. Also, make sure you buy well-balanced, age-appropriate food for your cat. Ask your vet, the representatives at your local pet store, or take a look at “Smart Shopping for Cat Food” for some advice.
6. Cats love to play. Toy mice, string, feathers, and even empty boxes make for great amusement. Playthings needn’t be expensive (they can even be homemade), just make sure there’s enough to keep your cat happy, active, and mentally occupied.
7. If you don’t want your sofa shredded, or your new Louis Vuitton bag ruined, invest in a scratching post.
8. Catnip, and those little freeze-dried cat treats are excellent tools for cat bribery and training.
9. Get pet insurance. We hope you won’t need it, but like they always say, “It’s better to be safe than sorry.”
10. If it’s a kitten you’re bringing home, make sure you start a grooming routine early. Bathing, brushing, and trimming claws will be an event to look forward to, rather than something to dread.
And there you have it. These are just a few of the things to keep in mind when you get yourself a new companion. Another important consideration: Cats often live for around 20 years, so you and your furry feline friend will be together for a long time.

Macaroni and Cheese Recipes
Mac and cheese is loved by Americans. That doesn’t mean it was founded here. The tasty trinity of macaroni, cheese, and butter has been around for a very long time. So long, in fact, that perhaps eating it is actually hard-wired into our DNA This makes it the ultimate comfort food.
Since the Kraft Company put it in a box in 1937 every American kid grew up with macaroni and cheese. There can be no doubt that its ultimate origins are Italian, as one finds macaroni and cheese recipes from the late thirteenth century in southern Italy.
The anonymous Liber de coquina, written in Latin by someone familiar with the Neapolitan court then under the sphere of Charles II of Anjou (1248-1309) has a recipe called de lasanis which we can call the first “macaroni and cheese” recipe.
It was a macaroni, in this case, lasagne sheets made from fermented dough and cut into two-inch squares that were cooked in water and tossed with grated cheese, probably Parmesan. The author suggests using powdered spices and layering the sheets of lasagne, just like today, with the cheese if desired.
Mac and Cheese (Stovetop)
A rich and creamy mac and cheese the people of all ages will love! Includes three kinds of cheese – cheddar, mozzarella and cream cheese. Made on the stovetop for a quick and easy side dish.
Ingredients
- 14 oz. dry elbow macaroni
- Salt
- 3 1/2 Tbsp butter
- 3 1/2 Tbsp flour
- 2 1/3 cups low-fat milk
- 1/2 tsp dry mustard, or more to taste
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 4 oz. cream cheese, diced into small pieces
- 8 oz. extra sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 4 oz. mozzarella cheese, shredded
- Reserved pasta water
Instructions
-
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, boil pasta to al dente according to package instructions. Drain pasta and reserve 1/2 cup pasta water.

While pasta is cooking, in a large saucepan (4 quart) or medium pot melt butter over medium heat then add flour, cook 1 minute whisking constantly.

While whisking slowly pour in milk, add in mustard and garlic powder. Increase heat slightly, then bring mixture to a low boil whisking constantly.

Reduce heat to low add in cream cheese and whisk until melted.

Remove saucepan from heat add in the shredded cheeses half at a time, and whisk to melt, while returning to warm heat as needed to melt fully.

Season sauce with salt to taste.

Toss pasta with cheese sauce, thin with pasta water a splash at a time as needed. Serve immediately.

Ground Beef served with macaroni noodles and a cheesy sauce. A favorite for kids and adults alike.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 pound Ground Beef (93% lean or leaner)
- 1-3/4 cups water
- 1 cup dry elbow macaroni
- 6 ounces processed cheese spread, cut into cubes
- 8 to 10 dill pickle slices (optional)
COOKING:
- Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add ground beef; cook 8 to 10 minutes, breaking into 3/4-inch crumbles and stirring occasionally.
Cook’s Tip: Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed ground beef. Ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F. Color is not a reliable indicator of ground beef doneness.
- Stir in water and macaroni; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 9 to 11 minutes or until macaroni is tender.
- Stir in cheese cubes. Cook 1 to 2 minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally.
- Season with salt and pepper, as desired. Serve beef mixture topped with pickle slices, if desired.
CREAMY HOMEMADE BAKED MAC AND CHEESE
This baked mac and cheese is a family favorite recipe, loved by children and adults. My version uses a combination of cheeses for a gloriously cheesy dish!
INGREDIENTS
- 1 lb. dried elbow pasta
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1 stick
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 2 1/2 cups half and half
- 4 cups grated medium sharp cheddar cheese divided
- 2 cups grated Gruyere cheese divided
- 1/2 Tbsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. black pepper
- 1/4 tsp. paprika
INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F and grease a 3 qt baking dish (9×13″). Set aside.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. When boiling, add dried pasta and cook 1 minute less than the package directs for al dente. Drain and drizzle with a little bit of olive oil to keep from sticking.

While water is coming up to a boil, grate cheeses and toss together to mix, then divide into three piles. Approximately 3 cups for the sauce, 1 1/2 cups for the inner layer, and 1 1/2 cups for the topping.

Melt butter in a large saucepan over MED heat. Sprinkle in flour and whisk to combine. Mixture will look like very wet sand. Cook for approximately 1 minute, whisking often. Slowly pour in about 2 cups or so of the milk/half and half, while whisking constantly, until smooth. Slowly pour in the remaining milk/half and half, while whisking constantly, until combined and smooth.

Continue to heat over MED heat, whisking very often, until thickened to a very thick consistency. It should almost be the consistency of a semi thinned out condensed soup.

Stir in spices and 1 1/2 cups of the cheeses, stirring to melt and combine. Stir in another 1 1/2 cups of cheese, and stir until completely melted and smooth.

In a large mixing bowl, combine drained pasta with cheese sauce, stirring to combine fully. Pour half of the pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top with 1 1/2 cups of grated cheeses, then top that with the remaining pasta mixture.

Sprinkle the top with the last 1 1/2 cups of cheese and bake for 15 minutes, until cheesy is bubbly and lightly golden brown.
Mac and Cheese can be made ahead:
- Make as directed (but do not bake), transfer to baking dish and cool completely. Cover tightly with foil and refrigerate 1-2 days ahead.
- Before baking, let dish sit on counter for 30 minutes.
- Bake at recipe temperature for 25-35 minutes, until hot and bubbly.
FIVE CHEESE VARIATION:
Replace cheese amounts with the following:
- 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 cup Colby cheese, shredded
- 1 cup Muenster cheese, shredded
- 1 1/2 cups Gruyere cheese, shredded
- 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
FOR A CRUNCHIER TOPPING AND FIRMER CONSISTENCY:
- Prepare recipe as directed but bake at 350 or 375 F degrees for 20-30 minutes. Broil at the end of baking for approximately 2-5 minutes, until golden brown and crunchy.
How did we get Mac and Cheese
Cheesemaking, which began 10,000 years ago, was originally about survival for a farm family or community: taking a very perishable protein (milk) and transforming it into something less perishable (cheese) so that there would be something to eat at a later date.
The exact origin of macaroni and cheese is unknown, though it most likely hails from Northern Europe, with the earliest known recorded recipe being scribbled down in 1769.
A staple of American cuisine, the creamy combo made its way to the United States courtesy of Thomas Jefferson, who, while visiting France, became enamored of fashionable pasta dishes served there.
He brought back noodle recipes and a pasta machine, since this foodstuff was unavailable in the Colonies. As president, he served macaroni and cheese at an 1802 state dinner.

What Makes A Good Logo with Tips

Because your logo is such an essential part of your brand, you want to make sure it’s done well. All your branding materials will have your logo on them. It’ll stare back at your customers from your website, your packaging, and your business cards. Make it count! Great, professional logo design not only has the power to communicate what you stand for. It will also make a good first impression and help you stand out from the competition. 5 PRINCIPLES OF GOOD LOGO DESIGN What makes a good logo? A good logo is instantly recognizable, simple in form, easy to remember, built for longevity, and able to fit different mediums of branding material. SIMPLE In order for a good logo design to take shape, we must take our concepts down to their simplest form. Simplicity is key and allows a logo to be easily recognized. Without simplicity, a logo cannot follow it’s other principles of memorability and versatility. MEMORABLE To build a lasting impression, a logo must be memorable. How else will your client’s customers remember them? The complexity of design serves as a negative in logo design, your logo will have only a few seconds to be absorbed by the average person. Keep it simple. TIMELESS Timeless refers to no particular point in time. Focus on building a strong concept for your logo and keep away from trends. As trends fade away, so will the logo. A timeless logo allows your client to enjoy it’s longevity, allowing your design to stay on board for the long-term. When designing a logo, remember to: • Build a strong concept • Stay away from trends • Design for the long-term VERSATILE Logos are marks and symbols that represent a business. As companies market themselves through various forms and mediums, they apply their logo to business cards, advertisements, folders and many more. When designing a logo, it is important to consider logo size equally on a business card as on a billboard. Can a logo be applied to various forms of size and color? Think about: • Printing in small and large sizes • Can the concept be understood in 1 color • Cost of printing multiple colors Design and present your logo concepts in only black and white, as colors can obscure your client's judgment and take away from the concept. Consider printing the logo in a 1-inch square. Is it visible? Thin lines are likely to fade or disappear when printing in small sizes, think about this when drawing your initial sketches. RELEVANT Does your logo fit the purpose and identity of the company? A logo must portray the company it represents through the use of shape and form. A good rule to follow (not always though) is smooth lines for a youthful company and straight lines for a structured company. It is important to make sure the logo is relevant to the industry your company is in. A technology logo is identifiable based on the symbol and the style of the type treatment. That style will not work for a clothing company or food product. Here are some questions you can ask yourself, to get to the bottom of your brand identity: Why did we start this business? What are the beliefs and values that are important to us as a company? What do we do better than anyone else? What makes us special? If we could describe our brand in three words, what would they be? What are the three words we would want our customers to use to describe us? The best place to steal borrow ideas? Your competition! Check out what’s already out there, what works well with your audience and what you should avoid. While stalking those other businesses, think about what makes them different from you and how you can emphasize these differences in your logo design.
