Mushroom Chicken Piccata

Classic Piccata reaches a new peak with the marvelous addition of mushrooms! This is a favorite in our family. Serve with rice and a green salad if desired.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup white wine
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Directions

  1. In a shallow dish or bowl, mix together flour, salt, and paprika. In a separate dish or bowl, mix together egg and milk. Dip chicken pieces in egg mixture, then in seasoned flour.
  2. In a large skillet, heat butter or margarine over medium-high heat. Saute chicken pieces until golden brown. Add mushrooms and onion and saute for 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. In a medium bowl combine the broth, wine, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Mix together and pour mixture over chicken and mushrooms. Reduce heat to medium-low and let the chicken mixture simmer for 25 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and juices run clear. Sprinkle with parsley and serve.

Greek Lemon Chicken and Potatoes

This Greek lemon chicken and potatoes would be one of my go-to entrees, and not just for big, fat weddings. It’s a proven crowd-pleaser, simple to make, and easy on the wallet.”

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 2/3 cup chicken broth, plus a splash to deglaze pan
  • chopped fresh oregano for garnish

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Lightly oil a large roasting pan.
  2. Place chicken pieces in large bowl. Season with salt, oregano, pepper, rosemary, and cayenne pepper. Add fresh lemon juice, olive oil, and garlic. Place potatoes in the bowl with the chicken; stir together until chicken and potatoes are evenly coated with marinade.
  3. Transfer chicken pieces, skin side up, to the prepared roasting pan, reserving marinade. Distribute potato pieces among chicken thighs. Drizzle with 2/3 cup chicken broth. Spoon remainder of marinade over chicken and potatoes.
  4. Place in preheated oven. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Toss chicken and potatoes, keeping chicken skin side up; continue baking until chicken is browned and cooked through, about 25 minutes more. An instant-read thermometer inserted near the bone should read 165 degrees F (74 degrees C). Transfer chicken to serving platter and keep warm.
  5. Set oven to broil or highest heat setting. Toss potatoes once again in pan juices. Place pan under the broiler and broil until potatoes are caramelized about 3 minutes. Transfer potatoes to serving platter with chicken.
  6. Place roasting pan on the stove over medium heat. Add a splash of broth and stir up browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Strain; spoon juices over chicken and potatoes. Top with chopped oregano.

A traditional Chinese favorite, you’ll enjoy the spicy sweet soy sauce with ginger and garlic flavors, ingredients that make this dish so addictive. This is a true General’s chicken recipe which requires frying the chicken twice to give it that extra crispiness. The cornstarch batter gives the chicken a light coating. 
If you are on a busy schedule, you can cut down the time considerably by making and refrigerating the sauce and chicken up to 3 days; and doing the second stage of frying the chicken later. Serve with rice or noodles tossed with lightly steamed fresh vegetables of your choice, such as broccoli, zucchini, squash, and green onions.

  • 4 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces

  2. Beat the eggs in a mixing bowl until smooth. Mix in the 1/2 cup plus 2 teaspoons cornstarch until no lumps remain. Mix in the chicken until evenly coated in the batter.
  3. In batches, carefully drop the chicken cubes into the hot oil one by one, cooking until the chicken turns golden brown and begins to float about 3 minutes. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  4. Meanwhile, combine the sugar, white vinegar, rice vinegar, sherry, soy sauce, and garlic in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir constantly until the sugar has dissolved and the sauce thickens to the consistency of light pancake syrup, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and keep warm.
  5. Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in the dried chiles and ginger; cook and stir until the ginger begins to brown, about 30 seconds. Remove the chiles and ginger from the wok and stir them into the sauce. Place the fried chicken cubes into the wok and cook until very crispy and dark golden brown. Serve the chicken with the sauce.

They do them when they first get up in the morning. In this article, I will review habits that will improve your day. WEAR A STEP- TRACKING DEVICE Wearing a step-tracking device can have an amazing impact on your physical fitness. If you’re not familiar with them, step trackers are small devices or watches that track your total steps and floors climbed every day. At first glance, “putting on a step-tracking device” might seem like an inconsequential habit. But there are a surprising number of people who buy these devices and never wear them. If you start each day by clipping on this device, you’ll take that crucial first step to build the exercise habit. And when you constantly wear this device, you’ll find reasons to get more movement throughout the day. This is another super simple habit. When you wake up in the morning, put on your step-tracking device. This should be the first action you complete to start the day. If you don’t have a step tracker, they come in many types and most are not costly. FILL A 32-OUNCE WATER BOTTLE Mild dehydration can cause headaches and fatigue, affect your concentration, impair short-term memory, and impede mental function. If you want to be at your most productive, it’s important for your brain to be firing on all cylinders. Therefore, you should make sure you are sufficiently hydrated before starting work. Obviously, it only takes you seven minutes to complete. As you master that raise it to 15 minutes if so inclined. This is another simple habit. Just start up the app and complete the recommended exercises. If not an app use any program you like. Just do one. Ingredients

for the chicken:

  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken thighs cut into bite size pieces
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil divided

for the sauce:

  • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice or apple cider vinegar
  • 3/4 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
  • 1/2 cup of water or chicken stock

to serve:

  • rice
  • steamed vegetables like broccoli, snap peas, carrots, baby corn

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together all ingredients for the sauce. Set aside.
  2. Cook rice and steam vegetables. Set aside.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk the egg with cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Add chicken pieces to the batter and stir well.
  4. In a large skillet, heat up 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Place chicken, piece by piece, in the pan and cook on all sides until the batter is golden and slightly brown. It’s easier to cook the chicken in two batches, using 1 tablespoon of oil each time.
  5. Once the chicken is done, pour sauce mixture over it and simmer on medium-low heat until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat.
  6. Serve chicken over rice with a side of steamed vegetables.

Recipe Notes

Play with the recipe and make other versions: 

  • spicy: add 2 teaspoons of sweet chili sauce to the sauce ingredients before adding to chicken. Add crushed red peppers if you like even more heat.
  • baked: instead of frying the chicken in a pan, line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange coated chicken on sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in 375 degrees F.
  • skinny: to cut down on calories, skip the cornstarch coating for chicken and brown chicken pieces in olive oil in the pan. Add sauce and simmer until thickened. 
  • honey: add 3 tablespoons of honey in place of brown sugar, to sauce mixture. Whisk and add to chicken.
  • stir fry: add Asian vegetable mix (available in the frozen section in grocery stores) and noodles or cooked rice to the chicken mixture in the pan. Heat everything up and serve!

Sesame Chicken with Broccoli

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 cups quick-cooking white rice
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons kosher salt, divided, plus more
  • 8 cups broccoli florets
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs, breasts, or a mix, patted dry, cut into 1″ chunks
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons of rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha
  • 1 large clove garlic, finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated ginger
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds, divided
  • 2 scallions, thinly sliced

PREPARATION

  1. Cook rice with a pinch of salt according to package directions.
  2. Set a steamer basket in a medium pot filled with 1″ water, cover pot, and bring water to a boil. Steam broccoli, covered, until crisp-tender, 5–6 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. Whisk cornstarch, pepper, and 1 1/2 tsp. salt in a large bowl. Add chicken and toss to coat.
  4. Heat 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil in a large skillet over high. Add half of the chicken and cook, turning occasionally, until chicken is cooked through and a light brown crust forms, about 5 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, whisk together honey, soy sauce, vinegar, Sriracha, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, 1 Tbsp. sesame seeds, and remaining 1/4 tsp. salt in a medium bowl.
  6. Transfer first batch of chicken to a plate. Heat remaining 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil and cook remaining chicken. Add sauce to skillet along with the first batch of chicken. Toss well and cook until sauce is reduced and thickened, about 2 minutes. Fold in reserved broccoli, toss to coat, and remove from heat.
  7. Divide chicken and broccoli among 4 plates and top with scallions and remaining 1 Tbsp. sesame seeds. Serve with rice on the side.

Crispy Sesame Chicken with a Sticky Asian Sauce 

Crispy Sesame Chicken with a Sticky Asian Sauce – Sweet, salty, crispy, sticky and a little bit spicy – it covers all the bases for one of these meals that Its a real family favorite!

Ingredients

  • 5 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 eggs lightly beaten
  • 3 tbsp cornflour/cornstarch
  • 10 tbsp plain/all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic salt
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 3 chicken breast fillets chopped into bite-size chunks

Sauce: 

  • 1 tbsp sesame oil optional – you can leave out and just sprinkle with plenty of sesame seeds at the end if you prefer
  • 2 cloves garlic peeled and minced
  • 1 tbsp Chinese rice vinegar white wine vinegar will work too
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp sweet chili sauce use more or less depending on the brand and how spicy you like it
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 4 tbsp soy sauce

To Serve:

  • Boiled rice
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds
  • Small bunch spring onions/scallions chopped

Instructions

  • Heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan until very hot.
  • Whilst the oil is heating, place the egg in one shallow bowl and the cornflour in another shallow bowl. Add the flour, salt, pepper, garlic salt, and paprika to another shallow bowl and mix together.
  • Dredge the chicken in the cornflour, then dip in the egg (make sure all of the chicken is covered in egg wash), and finally dredge it in the seasoned flour. Add to the wok and cook on high heat for 6-7 minutes, turning two or three times during cooking, until well browned. You may need to cook in two batches (I find I can do it in one batch so long as it’s no more than 3 chicken breasts). Remove from the pan and place in a bowl lined with kitchen towels.
  • Add all of the sauce ingredients to the hot wok, stir and bubble on high heat until the sauce reduces by about a third (should take 2-3 minutes). Add the chicken back in and toss in the sauce to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and divide between four bowls. Serve with boiled rice and top with sesame seeds and spring onions.

Notes

Double these ingredients if you want extra sauce, rather than just coating the chicken.

Baked Honey Sesame Chicken is a delicious, quick and easy recipe for cooking the chicken. The sweet and sour sauce is done in a matter of minutes and the flavor is amazing. The toasted sesame seeds alongside with the sauce complement very well the baked chicken. Serve over rice and lunch or dinner is done in less than an hour.

Ingredients

Makes about 3-4 servings

4 boneless, chicken breast halves (about 500g)

2/3 cup breadcrumbs salt and freshly ground black pepper canola oil for drizzling Sesame Sauce

1 tbsp sesame oil 2 garlic cloves, minced

1/3 cup honey 1/3 cup light soy sauce

1/2 cup chicken stock or water

2 tbsp cornstarch

2 tbsp water

1 tsp grated fresh ginger

1 tsp chili paste or chili jam

1/4 cup vinegar

1/4 cup brown sugar Garnish

2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350F (180C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the breadcrumbs into a flat bowl and set aside.

2. Cut the chicken breasts in 1-inch pieces and season with salt and pepper. Coat each piece in breadcrumbs and place into the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle with a little oil and bake for 25-30 minutes until cooked through.

3. Prepare the sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat add the sesame oil, garlic, ginger, chili jam and stir for a few seconds. Add the water (chicken stock), soy sauce, honey, vinegar, and brown sugar. Stir until it comes to a boil.

4. Whisk together the cornstarch and 2 tbsp of water and once the mixture is boiling add the cornstarch mixture, stirring until it thickens. Keep it on very low heat until the chicken is cooked.

5. Pour the sauce over chicken and top with sesame seeds. Serve immediately alongside rice.

What Makes Vegan Food So Healthy?
Vegan food comes from plants, it’s high in disease-preventing fiber, free of artery-clogging cholesterol and low in disease-promoting saturated fat.

Animal-based food, on the other hand, is highest in saturated fat and cholesterol and contains zero fiber.

Plant-based food is also high in phytochemicals and antioxidants, which help protect against heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain cancers.

 

Avocado Nori Rolls
Nori rolls make a great take-along meal. Avocado is a whole raw fat which helps to keep the skin and hair soft and rid the body of old toxic fats.

Nori is a sea vegetable which is the highest in protein content (48%) and is very easily digested.

Nori is extremely high in minerals.

Ingredients
2 sheets of raw or toasted sushi nori
1 large Romaine leaf cut in half down the length of the spine
2 TBS spicy miso paste (see recipe)
1 avocado, peeled and sliced
1⁄2 red, yellow or orange bell pepper, julienned
1⁄2 cucumber, peeled, seeded and julienned
1⁄2 cup raw sauerkraut
1⁄2 carrot, beet or zucchini, shredded
1 cup alfalfa or favorite green sprouts (sunflower, buckwheat, etc.) 1 small bowl of water for sealing roll

 Directions 
1. Place a sheet of nori on a sushi rolling mat or washcloth, lining it up at the end closest to you.
2. Place the Romaine leaf on the edge of the nori with the spine closest to you.
3. Spread Spicy Miso Paste on the Romaine
4. Line the leaf with all ingredients in descending order, placing sprouts on last.
5. Roll the Nori sheet away from you tucking the ingredients in with your fingers
6. as you go.
7. Seal the roll with water or Spicy Miso Paste. Slice the roll into 6 or 8 rounds.

 

Easy Pea-sy Soup

 Ingredients 
3 cups frozen, organic peas
1 1/2 cup boiled hot water
1 ripe avocado or 1⁄4 cup hemp seeds
2 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. salt
dash of cayenne
Optional: 1⁄2 tsp. cumin powder
Optional: 1 handful of greens such as spinach, parsley, dill, arugula or cilantro

Directions
1. Blend on high until smooth and creamy
2. Top with freeze-dried peas and hemp seeds and serve immediately.

 

Chia-Coconut Pudding (Tapioca with a twist)
Ingredients
1⁄2 cup white or black Chia seeds
1 1⁄2 cups purified water (to soak the Chia seeds)
2/3 cup nut milk or coconut milk
2 Tbs. coconut oil (make sure it’s high quality and smells fresh) 3 Tbs. Honey or xylitol
6 Tbs. orange juice (about 1 orange)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1⁄2 tsp. butterscotch or rum extract
6 drops liquid stevia, vanilla flavor

 Directions 
1. Soak the chia seeds in the water for 2 or more hours (you can soak them up to 12+ hours)
2. Blend everything except the soaked chia together until creamy.
3. Mix the cream with the soaked chia seeds.
4. Refrigerate or enjoy immediately.

 

Mock Salmon Pate
 Ingredients 
6 large carrots, chopped
1⁄4 cup lemon juice
2 cups soaked almonds (1 1⁄4 cups before soaking)
4 green onions, finely chopped
1 1⁄2 stalks celery, finely chopped
3 tsp. kelp powder
1 1/2 Tbs. wheat free tamari or 3⁄4 tsp. Real or Himalayan salt (or to taste) 1-2 cups water as needed

Directions
Place Lemon juice and carrots in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add water as needed to make the mixture the consistency of pate.
Place blended mixture in a bowl and stir in the remaining ingredients.
Adjust flavors as needed.

Hearts of Baltimore Crab Cakes

Ingredients:
Garlicky Dill Aïoli
1/2 cup vegan mayonnaise
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill 1 teaspoon minced garlic
Crab Cakes
3 tablespoons grapeseed or safflower oil, divided, plus more for frying
1 (14-ounce) can hearts of palm, (not packed in sugar), roughly chopped to the consistency of crab meat
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/4 cup diced red bell pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 teaspoons minced garlic
2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1/4 cup vegan mayonnaise
Breading
1/2 cup gluten-free bread crumbs, or more 1 tablespoon Old Bay Seasoning
Lemon wedges, to serve

Garlicky Dill Aïoli

Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl. Mix well and add salt and pepper to taste. Set in the fridge to keep cool.

Crab Cakes

Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hearts of palm and sauté for 8 to 10 minutes stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Cook until golden brown on all sides.

Set aside to cool.

Add the celery and peppers and mix well. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a skillet over medium-heat heat. Add the onions and sauté until translucent, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté for 1 minute.

Remove from the heat, add to the hearts of palm, and mix well. Add the Old Bay seasoning, cornstarch, and mayo.

Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl and mix well. Set aside to cool to room temperature, then shape the mixture into four round patties.

Breading:

In a shallow bowl, combine the bread crumbs and Old Bay seasoning, stirring to mix. Coat the patties with the bread- crumb mixture and refrigerate for 20 minutes.

Heat about 3 tablespoons of oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat until hot and shimmering.

Carefully place the patties in the skillet and cook until golden brown on each side, approximately 2 minutes per side. Watch closely to prevent burning.

Transfer the cooked patties to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve hot, topped with the aïoli, with lemon wedges on the side.

Ingredients 2 sheets of raw or toasted sushi nori 1 large Romaine leaf cut in half down the length of the spine 2 TBS spicy miso paste (see recipe) 1 avocado, peeled and sliced 1⁄2 red, yellow or orange bell pepper, julienned 1⁄2 cucumber, peeled, seeded and julienned 1⁄2 cup raw sauerkraut 1⁄2 carrot, beet or zucchini, shredded 1 cup alfalfa or favorite green sprouts (sunflower, buckwheat, etc.) 1 small bowl of water for sealing roll Directions 1. Place a sheet of nori on a sushi rolling mat or washcloth, lining it up at the end closest to you. 2. Place the Romaine leaf on the edge of the nori with the spine closest to you. 3. Spread Spicy Miso Paste on the Romaine 4. Line the leaf with all ingredients in descending order, placing sprouts on last. 5. Roll the Nori sheet away from you tucking the ingredients in with your fingers 6. as you go. 7. Seal the roll with water or Spicy Miso Paste. Slice the roll into 6 or 8 rounds. Easy Pea-sy Soup Ingredients 3 cups frozen, organic peas 1 1/2 cup boiled hot water 1 ripe avocado or 1⁄4 cup hemp seeds 2 tsp. onion powder 1 tsp. salt dash of cayenne Optional: 1⁄2 tsp. cumin powder Optional: 1 handful of greens such as spinach, parsley, dill, arugula or cilantro Directions 1. Blend on high until smooth and creamy 2. Top with freeze-dried peas and hemp seeds and serve immediately. Chia-Coconut Pudding (Tapioca with a twist) Ingredients 1⁄2 cup white or black Chia seeds 1 1⁄2 cups purified water (to soak the Chia seeds) 2/3 cup nut milk or coconut milk 2 Tbs. coconut oil (make sure it’s high quality and smells fresh) 3 Tbs. Honey or xylitol 6 Tbs. orange juice (about 1 orange) 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1⁄2 tsp. butterscotch or rum extract 6 drops liquid stevia, vanilla flavor Directions 1. Soak the chia seeds in the water for 2 or more hours (you can soak them up to 12+ hours) 2. Blend everything except the soaked chia together until creamy. 3. Mix the cream with the soaked chia seeds. 4. Refrigerate or enjoy immediately. Mock Salmon Pate Ingredients 6 large carrots, chopped 1⁄4 cup lemon juice 2 cups soaked almonds (1 1⁄4 cups before soaking) 4 green onions, finely chopped 1 1⁄2 stalks celery, finely chopped 3 tsp. kelp powder 1 1/2 Tbs. wheat free tamari or 3⁄4 tsp. Real or Himalayan salt (or to taste) 1-2 cups water as needed Directions Place Lemon juice and carrots in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add water as needed to make the mixture the consistency of pate. Place blended mixture in a bowl and stir in the remaining ingredients. Adjust flavors as needed. My understanding of copyright infringement is this:

Using any copyright image without the expressed consent of the copyright holder is illegal.

Copyright is a well-known type of intellectual property (IP) protection represented by the © symbol. Watch any film and the copyright infringement warning will appear, threatening jail time and fines. Copyright extends beyond video to songs, pictures, books, blogs, podcasts, paintings, and even software. For those who are both consumers and business owners, it’s important to know how to avoid copyright infringement.

If you’re using a copyright image for your own private use, it is technically illegal, but extremely difficult to enforce as authorities will have to invade your privacy to know that you’re doing something illegal. Private use here means that it’s not available to the public (so nothing on your website, etc).

Copyright laws are designed to protect the creator of original works, which are creative expressions from others using and profiting their work, without permission. The idea is that the author or creator owns the rights to the work and can decide if and how others use his or her creation.

If you’re using it for commercial reasons where you stand to make financial gain from it, then it is easier to enforce since it’s public and the copyright holders will have every incentive to sue you. After all, you’re making money from their work.

Copyright v. Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of using another’s work and passing it off as your own. While such use could open you up to a copyright infringement claim, there is no legal liability associated with the act of plagiarism.

Nevertheless, it is a good idea to avoid plagiarism. The best way to avoid plagiarism is to adequately cite your work. Depending on the nature of your online work, your citations can be informal in style, or adhere to the more formal citation conventions. See the University of Iowa’s Guide to Citation Style Guides, and Yale College’s guide to citing blogs for more information.

Since plagiarism and copyright infringement are similar concepts, a few examples may be helpful:

  • If an author publishes a poem on his blog in which he substantially copies from Dante’s Inferno but passes off the words as his own, he has committed plagiarism. However, the author has not committed copyright infringement because Dante’s work is in the public domain.
  • In contrast, if a website owner publishes a compilation of contemporary short stories on her website without the permission of the original authors, she would be liable for copyright infringement, even if the compilation properly notes the original authors and thus avoids plagiarism.
  • Finally, if a journalist uses content from yesterday’s daily newspaper as his own original article in a weekly online magazine, the journalist has committed both plagiarism and copyright infringement

There are loopholes to this though and that is if the image is seen to be “transformative” or as a parody/satire of the original work. In other words, if the image is used for “artistic reasons”. Problem is that art is often very subjective and the courts will have to decide whether or not the new work qualifies as “art” and not as some direct attempt to use someone else’s creative work for your own financial gain.

This is usually the problems with this kind of cases, where one party argues it on artistic merits and the other party argues it on a commercial basis.

Ultimately, it depends on how recognizable the copyrighted image is and how you are using it. If the copyright image is beyond recognition, then the copyright holder will have a very difficult time proving that you’re benefitting from their work. If the copyright image is used purely for artistic reasons, then the copyright holder will have to prove that you’re using it for purely commercial purposes and that your work doesn’t have any artistic value.

The owner of a copyright may file an infringement lawsuit in federal court. If the court deems that an infringement has occurred, the plaintiff may be awarded monetary damages of up to $10,000 on top of attorney’s fees, and/or court costs. A willful copyright infringer can face a punishment of up to $10,000 and up to one-year imprisonment because it will be considered a federal misdemeanor.

The court may also grant the prevailing plaintiff a preliminary or permanent injunction to have the defendant stop using or producing and infringing the copyrighted material. A preliminary injunction can be granted early to prevent copying during the lawsuit, and if the court finds that there has been infringement, the preliminary injunction can turn into a permanent one.

eBay’s VeRO program

To understand the VeRO program, it is important to first clarify the meaning of intellectual property.

Intellectual property – patents, copyright, and trademarks

Intellectual property is the ownership of ideas. Intellectual property can be protected by law in the form of patents, copyright, and trademarks. These three methods allow owners to gain recognition and financial benefit from their idea. Examples of intellectual infringement include:

Misusing brand names

Brand names cannot be used in a listing unless the item is manufactured by that brand name

Example of listing violation: A pair of leggings described as ‘just like Lululemon,’ but not made by Lululemon.

Bootlegged media

It is against copyright laws to sell copied, pirated or bootlegged movies, music, and software.

Example of listing violation: A burned DVD featuring a pirated movie.

Item description and image

Using a copied description or stock images is against copyright rules unless permission is granted to use them.

Example of listing violation: A copied and pasted description from the manufacturer’s website.

Imports

Some items are not allowed to be sold outside their country of origin.

Example of listing violation: A video game that was intended for sale in Japan only.

The eBay Seller Center offers more examples, including some region-specific variations of intellectual property infringements.

Avoiding a VeRO violation is fairly easy for sellers following good eBay practices. Here are some quick tips:

  • Always create original listing descriptions with accurate information and details about the item
  • Remember that using factual information from the manufacturer (such as weight and dimensions) is OK
  • Take photos of each item, avoiding stock images
  • Do not create and sell unauthorized copies of movies or other media
  • Don’t mislead buyers – avoid comparisons and only use brand names when selling an item made by that brand
  • Include a photo of the original receipt, with personal information removed, in listings that feature commonly counterfeited items (e.g. purses)
  • Double check items are real before selling them on eBay
  • Ask questions – if in doubt about an item, contact the manufacturer via eBay’s VeRO Participant Profiles

SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization, and there is nothing really mystical about it. You might have heard a lot about SEO and how it works, but basically what it is is a measurable, repeatable process that is used to send signals to search engines that your pages are worth showing in Google’s index. Basically, Google uses a complex mathematical formula called an algorithm to give a score to every website and every search people to do in Google to figure out which website should rank best for what people are looking for. Think of the algorithm like a collection of empty buckets. One bucket gives you a score for the quality of your site, one bucket gives you a score for how many sites link to you, one bucket gives you a score for how people trust you. Your job is to fill up more buckets in the algorithm than any other website. You can affect your search engine ranking by having the highest score in terms of quality of your site, of having the highest score in terms of the authority of your website, of having the highest score in terms of the most trusted store for that search that people are looking for. The good thing is that there are hundreds of buckets, and for every single one of these buckets these scores put together in the algorithm to figure out where you rank is an opportunity for you to fill it up and rank better. So optimizing your site for search results really means getting the highest score in as many of these points as you can. Now, some buckets are worth more than others, and the three main buckets that you need to be aware of for search rankings are quality, trust, and authority. So quality: what Google is trying to measure when they’re trying to figure out what sites should rank is offering something valuable or unique or interesting to googles searchers. For example good content - if you are selling t-shirts and you are using the same description that every other t-shirt seller is using on their website then you are not offering anything unique to Google’s searchers. Even though your t-shirts might look pretty cool, the content is the same as everybody else’s, so Google has no way of telling that your t-shirts or your t-shirt site is better than anybody else’s. Instead, offer people interesting content. For example: offer them the ability to personalize their t-shirt. Give them information on how to wash it. What’s the thread count? Is it stain resistant? Is this something you should wear in the summer or is it heavier for winter? Give people information, or even be more creative. Get people to share pictures of themselves wearing the t-shirt. Create a community of people who are interested in your product. Get a famous person to wear it and share that picture online. Do something different, do something unique.
